Company Donates Linen and Gowns to Help Worthy Cause

Mt. Vernon, NY, November 6, 2014- Unitex, a leader in the healthcare laundry industry, supports community programs across many facets, and recently the company is taking community to a global level.  Unitex is currently involved with donating linen and gowns to the International Organization for Women and Development (IOWD) in Rwanda. For the past three years, the company has donated a large quantity of linen and garments to help with patient care.  Joshua Holden, MD, a general OB/GYN physician at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center and long-time IOWD supporter and volunteer, works with Unitex to bring the linen to Rwanda.

Dr. Holden volunteers yearly for two-week missions in Rwanda to help prevent and treat obstetric fistula, a medical condition that occurs after severe or failed childbirth. For the past three years, he has trained Rwandan medical students, residents and doctors in labor and delivery management and surgical procedures to prevent obstructed labor.  The donated linen and gowns from Unitex helps Dr. Holden with his missions.

The International Organization for Women and Development is a private non-profit that was organized in 2003 to treat women of this condition in Africa, and to train doctors in techniques to prevent the injury. The IOWD’s fistula program grew out of one woman’s determination to make a difference for African women.  Two million women around the world suffer from disabling symptoms of obstetric fistula, a condition most common in poor countries that do not have health resources comparable to developed nations.

“The opportunity to witness IOWD’s continuous impact on the healthcare of women in Rwanda is incredibly rewarding,” said Dr. Holden. “The spirit of the Rwandan doctors and nurses inspires me to return year after year.”

“Working with Dr. Holden and the IOWD is a natural fit for us given our commitment to the community and the medical field,” said David Potack, Vice President of Unitex.  “This is an incredibly worthy cause and we are happy to make a difference.  We also admire Dr. Holden’s dedication to this organization and look forward to helping in years to come.”
