New Brunswick, NJ, May 2016– In honor of Earth Day 2016, fifth grade students from four local elementary schools took part in a “Sweep Up” event and contest to help beautify New Brunswick.  The Sweep Up event was coordinated by City of New Brunswick and supported by local companies such as Unitex, a regional healthcare laundry industry business with locations throughout the Northeast (including New Brunswick). This is the third year that Unitex has sponsored this event and that its employees from the New Brunswick plant have come out to volunteer.

Collectively the 5th grade students along with the team at Unitex removed approximately 1.29 tons of litter.  This included .84 tons of trash and .45 tons of recyclables.  The team at Unitex worked with the 5th grade students from Paul Robeson Elementary School and took home the Silver Broom Award. The Roosevelt School earned the Golden Broom Award with 46 lbs of litter collected per student while Woodrow Wilson won the Bronze Broom Award. McKinley School found the most unusual item, a broken doll, and won the Go Green Broom Award.

In addition to collecting litter, the students were treated to a party (sponsored by Unitex), where they enjoyed pizza and a magic show.  They also learned more about recycling, and were met by city officials who commended the students on their efforts during this special event.

“At Unitex, we think it’s important to teach the younger generations about recycling, green practices and caring for the community,” said Seth Gershman, Marketing & Communications Director for Unitex, “We enjoy being part of this event annually and hope that we are making a difference in New Brunswick.”

Committed to education and giving back to the local schools and community, Unitex helped support other Earth Day 2016 events throughout the Northeast. Unitex also supports the community of New Brunswick on many levels outside of the annual Sweep Up event.
