Newburgh, NY, April 14, 2014- For over 2 decades the Science Club at Fostertown Elementary School in Newburgh has been recycling cans and bottles, and all of the nickels and dimes that the club collects are put back into the many environmental projects that they sponsor at the school.  There have been years when the club recycled over 10,000 cans and bottles and this resulted in winning awards both at the county and state levels.  A school garden, nature trail, tree farm and aquatic area are just a few of the Science Club sponsored activities, but due to construction at the school last summer, the recycling center had to be dismantled and the severe weather during the fall and winter caused a lot of damage to the nature trail and school garden.

Committed to giving back to the Newburgh community, Unitex, a regional healthcare laundry industry business with locations throughout the Northeast (including Newburgh), has stepped in to help the Science Club at Fostertown Elementary School. Local representatives from the Unitex Newburgh plant will be visiting the school on April 25th to present John Garzione, (Fostertown ETC Science Club Teacher Advisor) and the Science Club a check to help rebuild the school garden.  Unitex is also sponsoring a pizza party for the class that collects the most cans and bottles during the school’s recycling contest.  This event in Newburgh is part of an Earth Day series the company has planned throughout the Northeast during the week of April 21st.

“The management team at Unitex embraces green practices and supports technological developments for a better and greener earth,” said David Potack, Vice President of Unitex.  “We feel that in order to create impact, we need to start with the younger generations.  Our company is very committed to the community of Newburgh so it was a natural fit to support a school like Fostertown Elementary in celebration of Earth Day.  These children are the future of our city.”

“It is not unusual for members who graduate from Fostertown to come back to help out with Science Club,” John Garzione, Fostertown ETC Science Club Teacher Advisor. “Mr. Otto, one of the clubs advisors, was a member 15 years ago and he came back to help out during his middle, high school, and college years. He is now a 5th grade teacher in our school.  Many Science Club members have gone on to become leaders in education, science, politics, and the military.  As you can see this is an important program for us and we are grateful for the support from the team at Unitex.”
